Two Filings, Two Purposes

SR-22 and FR-44 both prove to the state that a driver carries the minimum required insurance, but they aren’t interchangeable. California uses the SR-22 for most standard filing requirements, including DUI-related suspensions, at-fault accidents without insurance, and excessive points. The FR-44 is reserved for more serious cases in states that use it, typically requiring significantly higher liability limits than a standard policy.

For most California drivers ordered to file, the SR-22 is what your court order or DMV notice will specify. What varies more than the form itself is the underlying policy — insurers price SR-22 policies based on the violation that triggered the requirement, your driving history, and how long you’ve been insured continuously.

What Happens When the Filing Period Ends

Once your required filing period is complete and your record has been clear, you can typically drop the SR-22 filing itself, though your policy remains active. Rates often improve over time as the triggering incident ages off your record, so it’s worth revisiting your coverage with an agent once your filing requirement is satisfied.
